EAP Counsellor Supervision Group

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselling is brief, practical and often clinically complex.

You may be working with limited sessions, different provider systems, variable referral flow, third-party expectations, workplace dynamics and clients whose needs do not always fit neatly inside the EAP frame.

This group is for counsellors providing EAP services who want a thoughtful supervision space with supervisors who understand the realities of EAP work.

Reflective supervision for counsellors working inside EAP systems

EAP work can look straightforward from the outside. A client is referred, a session is booked, a few appointments are offered, and the work is expected to be focused and efficient.

In practice, it is often more complicated.

Clients may present with workplace stress, bullying, burnout, grief, trauma, relationship distress, family violence, risk, conflict, performance concerns or organisational change. Sometimes the issue is individual. Sometimes it is systemic. Often, it is both.

EAP counsellors need to think clearly about clinical care while also holding the limits of the contract, the expectations of the provider, the role of the organisation and the needs of the person in front of them.

This group offers space to slow that down.

What we may explore

This group may include reflection on:

Brief work and clinical focus
How to work ethically and effectively when session numbers are limited, the presenting issue is complex and there may be little continuity.

Clients who need more support
What to do when a client appears to need longer-term therapy, specialist support or additional sessions, but the EAP contract does not easily allow for it.

Confidentiality and third-party complexity
How to hold the client’s privacy and wellbeing when an employer, EAP provider or workplace system is also in the frame.

Multiple clients from the same organisation
How to manage boundaries, confidentiality, conflicts of interest and the pressure of holding several perspectives from the same workplace.

Organisational dynamics
How to think systemically about workplace conflict, bullying, restructures, leadership issues, burnout, moral injury and organisational cultures under strain.

Documentation and accountability
How to write clear, appropriate notes within EAP systems, especially when risk, workplace issues or third-party expectations are present.

The emotional load of EAP work
How to process the cumulative impact of fast-moving, varied and sometimes intense work, particularly when the role can feel isolated or transactional.

Why group supervision?

EAP counsellors often work across multiple systems without much collegial contact. You may be carrying complex work, but not always have a regular place to think with others who understand the particular pressures of the role.

A small supervision group gives you the benefit of shared reflection, different clinical perspectives and a steadier sense that you are not working this out alone. The aim of the group is to support clearer thinking, stronger ethical judgement and more sustainable practice inside the realities of EAP work.
